In New England there are virtually no physicians dedicated to performing truly state of the art hair transplantation. In my opinion, Dr. Ivan Cohen is a stand out exception.

Dr. Cohen is dedicated full time to hair transplantation and was among the first surgeons to utilize the microscope in preparing follicular unit grafts. It was obvious after observing him and his staff performing surgery that they have stayed on the cutting edge of the most recent evolutions and refinements in hair transplantation, including recent ultra refined techniques.

His experienced staff of seven medical technicians is composed mostly of professional nurses. I was very impressed by their careful, meticulous and refined graft trimming, which was all done using microscopes. Given his large and well trained staff, Dr. Cohen can provide his patients with sessions in excess of 2,500 follicular unit grafts with uncompromising quality.

He uses the custom blade cutter to create tiny blades and minimally invasive incisions that are as small as 0.7 mm.

He also performs the trichophytic closure to minimize any visible scarring in the donor area. Dr. Cohen also prefers to remove narrow strips that do not exceed 1.5 cm in width.

Dr. Cohen has a strong background in dermatology and scalp/hair loss conditions and lectures on hair transplantation and hair loss at the Yale University School of Medicine where he is an associate clinical professor of dermatology.

He meets with every patient personally to determine whether they are a candidate for hair transplantation. These consultations are complimentary.

Dr. Cohen has an excellent reputation within the medical community and in his region but he is not particularly well known on this online hair transplant community. I did encourage him to share more of his impressive results online.

During my visit to his office today the surgery of the day was a small hairline session. The patient had low donor density, under 70 follicular units per cm2, so the 1.1 cm wide strip only yielded 919 follicular unit grafts.

Dr. Cohen created ultra refined incisions as small as 0.7 mm for the one hair grafts. In my opinion, the incisions were very clean and minimally invasive and the grafts and placing were excellent. However, ideally I think the patient would have benefited from more grafts to achieve greater density from this first surgery.

I expect that many of his other patients who have higher donor density do get higher density hair transplants.

The work that you saw certainly looks refined although I wonder if the patient maybe isn't a candidate for Ht's if he has such a limited donor area. His limited supply might not be capable of ever fulfilling the demand?

Repair work is tricky if you are just trying to camo the old work. Those fripping plugs are hard to hide unless a ton of grafts are densely packed. Better to remove and break those plugs up IMO. I tried camo first and decided to remove them my last HT, results for me are looking much better so far. I am sure those guys in the photo's would rather be slick bald than have those ugly cornrows showing.

I agree fully, however I believe that it is possible to do a much better job than what is evidenced on his web site. If a doc doesn't think he/she can cammo the old work than they shouldn't attempt it.

Thanks for your feedback. I should mention that the patient was in his late forties and only a class 2 or three in hair loss. His hair behind his hairline was strong. So I think he was a good candidate, despite his donor density being low - since all he needs to do is restore his hairline.

I agree that Dr. Cohen's photos do not do his actual work justice. I push and pull to get physicians to update their photos. But after keeping their staff and patients happy, doing surgery, running their clinics etc. photos seem to be at the bottom of their list. That's a shame for the doctors and their patients.
