My Consultant has told me that my HT procedure will require an extra $300 for post-op medicine to aid the healing process. One of the medicines he quoted was 'Graftcyte'. I'm assuming this will expedite the healing process. What is 'Graftcyte' and how could it possibly cost so much? Wouldn't a $5 tube of Neosporin work almost as well?
Graftcyte is supposed to help the healing process of the recipient scabs (the FU scabs).
There has been quite a few posts on this site discussing Graftcyte. Apparently, it depends on your doctor. I've seen several post from HT veterans who swear by it.
I did not use it. I discussed it with my doctor. He did not necessarily recommend it because he felt it was additional money for something that he felt was not necessarily proven (clinically). However, he did leave the decision up to me and I chose to save a few bucks.
It sounds like a significant markup being tacked on, by your clinic. Check out the prices for Graftcyte online, for an identical course of treatment, and I bet you will find out this is true.
Your doctor is already making plenty of money on your surgery. He should not be gouging you on additional treatments.
Just had my 2000 follicular unit graft transplant today and Shaprio Medical in Minneapolis. They gave me an entire bottle of the stuff to spray on for the next 5 days. They say that is all that is needed. I did find a GraftCyte shampoo on folica.com for $14.99 to use everyday for the next month. The doctor said go ahead and use it. It couldn't hurt and I have to wash my hair anyways.
