Whats up gentlemen?

Had an HT with Dr. Rose yesterday. All went well. To begin, he measured my head six ways to Sunday to get the right hairline. In fact he pulled out the ruler on multiple occasions during the surgery. It is my understanding that not all docs do this. He apologized and explained that he was a bit "anal" on the hairline but wanted to get it just right. I told him to take his sweet ass time. I had a crappy HT done back in the day by Nu-Hart (stay away from them) He explained that they actually took my donor hair too low and he was concerned that if he cut it out the chance of scar stretching could occur but couldn't be sure. After considering that, I decided that one scar is better than two and asked him to remove it. I had originally went in for 2000+ grafts but because of the scar, wound up with @ 1863, which was still awesome. He even managed to take out the unnatural grafts put in by Nu-hart and reused them. Some of them actually had 5/6 hairs in them. In the front hairline no less! He put in one, two and three hair grafts. All totaled @ 3,500 hairs and a ledge closure. I pretty much passed out through the whole thing (medicine lightweight). I drifted in and out all day. The only thing I can say that was uncomfortable was the re-numbing of my head as the day went on. For some reason that seemed to sting a bit more then when they initially did it. I was in the chair for about 7 hours. Got to hand it to the techs too. 7 hours of cutting grafts, amazing. Everybody was great. I don't know who said I would probably be thinking about my next HT when I left, but he was right. Will see what the next nine months brings and look into another one if necessary. I will post pics of my shampooed noggin shortly. I'll shampoo at @ 6:00 this evening. Thanks to all who post on this forum and for the feedback and wisdom. Dr. Rose and staff were really excellent. Now, the waiting. Later ASDS

Glad everything worked out so well for you. Dr.Rose is top notch, which was evidenced by the amount of time he spent designing the hairline. Sounds like all went without a hitch. I am sure your recuperation will be speedy too and in the upcoming months the grafts will begin to come into their glory. Keep us up to date with your progress. Looking forward to see some pics of your experience. Good Luck!

Thanks for the post and congrats to you..........."told him to take his sweet ass time"....hilarious!! Big Grin

I'll be anxious to see the results. Dr. Rose does great work....always a pleasure to review the results he's turning out!

Where did you have most of the grafts placed and where are you at on the Norwood scale?? Sounds like mostly hairline work?? Right?

Not sure which Norwood I am (was) but he concentrated on the front hairline and worked his way back up to the crown, so more or less even with my ears on both sides 1's for the first 3-4 rows, then two's for a way back and then the three's. He didn't want to blow donor hair working on the crown just yet, so I'm hanging tight for 9 months or so to see what the results will be. He mentioned something about Propecia and writing me a script for it, however, don't know much about it, so anyone who is using Propecia please let me know your results. Also, anybody who is using anything positive, I'd be interested in that too.Shampoo, vitamins, snake oil, whatever. Thanks, ASDS

Thanks for the detail..................if I were you I'd get Dr. Cooley to get you the script for Propecia and get on it quick. Do some research on this site about it as there's plenty of info. I just started taking it after HT#2 at age 39 and can tell you it's working for me. Since most of my work for HT#2 was in the crown, I can't tell you how much it's helped me there but I am regrowing hair in the hairline.......still pretty fine hair at this point but it's getting better as time goes on. Long story short.......Propecia (Finasteride) blocks DHT which is what attacks your Male-Pattern-Baldness susceptible hair miniturizing it over time until its eventual permanent demise. Some buy Proscar instead of Propecia......Propecia is a 1mg pill, Proscar 5mg so you just cut it into 4ths, it's quite a bit more cost effective.

You may want to consider Nioxin shampoo and conditioner which "may" remove surface DHT from your scalp and some use Nizoral 1 or 2 times weekly....it's an anti-fungal shampoo. These can help to provide optimal growth conditions for your hair.

Minoxidil, a topical solution, is also proven to fight hair loss with the possibility for regrowth. Some use it in conjuction with Propecia (Finasteride)...........but the regimen was too messy for me to consider.

With Propecia or Minoxidil, be sure you're ready to commit to them before starting. Anything you gain or keep due to them will fall out if you stop using them.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Hairbank, I was using Mioxidil once daily in the evening, its just too greasy to use twice a day. I'm not sure if this was helping or not. I'm on the fence as to whether to commit to something like Propecia also because if you stop using it, goodbye hair. I'm interested in all the "natural" stuff, so I will be looking into Nizoral and Nioxin and anything else that can improve the scalp conditions. Also, when can I start the Nioxin and Nizoral after the HT? Is the five day mark cool or should I wait until the sutures are out? Thanks again, pics to follow ASDS

It's probably okay to start with the Nioxin/Nizoral regimen at 5 days but you may want to wait until the sutures are out just to make sure all incisions on the scalp are closed up good. You may want to place a quick call to Dr. Rose's office to be sure.

I initially had the same reservations that you have about Propecia but I would encourage you to keep researching it. Once I got 2 HT's I thought "okay, this stuff's with me for life so I'm set".......this is true, but, the native hair on the sides and back of my head may or may not keep receding which Propecia will halt or drastically slow. I really don't count on it for regrowth at all, just maintenance.

Anyhow....happy growin' to you. Look forward to seeing the pics! Cool
