I don't know if this is an issue at all, but I wonder if scalp thickness plays a role in the donor area.
I don't think all scalps are the same thickness.
I know mine is lax but it feels very thin to my skull. Would that prevent the Doc from taking a wider strip than if a person had a thick scalp.

Maybe a Doctor could answer....Or Falceros!

Very thin (atrophic) scar tissue may be too thin to hold transplanted follicles. Technical measures are available to deal with either hypertrophic or atrophic scar tissue, but the physician hair restoration specialist must be confident that these measures will produce a good result.

I think there may be a question of blood supply as well with this issue.

Folica, I think if you possess very thin skin, you may not be able to take very wide strips as part of the closure techniques used rely on part of the outermost epidermis to "hold" some tension as the subcutaneous tissue gradually closes and heals over a longer period of time.

Please note, this is just a posit on my part, but I do remember having a conversation with someone about this very issue----

Hopefully a Doc or more informed member can shed some additional light.

I will work to find additional information if I can.

Take Care,
J

B spot, thats a heck of a lot more than I knew about the subject! Smile Thanks for your input, It does validate what I am thinking.
I know on some people you can actually see roles of tissue on thier scalp.
As I mentioned mine is thin.
I guess I am stuck with that characteristic & it will be up to the Dr's skill!

Follica,

The B Spot is correct. In fact, I've seen cases somewhat recently of poor donor closure due to this issue (along with other factors - some of which could have been avoided). Unfortunately, I can't get into the whole medical explanation because I'm not a doctor and don't have the expertise in this area. But certainly those with thinner skin (especially due to a medical reason) can be at greater risk than those with thicker skin and create scar healing issues.

I would also like to hear from a doctor for a more detailed explanation.
