After consulting with docs and an impending HT for myself, the consensus is to stay out of the sun for 6-months so as not to cause permanent change in the pigmentation of the recipient area.

We suffer here in Chicago from dreary winters (we have been lucky so far!!) and by the time summer roles around we are itching to get outside....

So my question is, What have you all done in terms of sunscreen for the scalp? What product(s) have you tried, etc.? I know wearing a cap is the best, but I don't want to spend my whole summer outdoors with a hat--petty I know!?!

I found this product and was curious if anyone has tried it.

First, Do not schedule your HT in the Spring or Summer. I would go for HT in the months from OCT-FEB only unless you want to wear a hat all Summer.

Now, after a few months, I would allow some sunlight, just don't get a burn I actually think it stimulates the scalp some. A little wind blowing thru your hair is good to, I wouldn't shelter those folicles too long, let them breathe a little! Wink There are theories on hair loss due to long stays under in a submarine for example.

I would not throw sunscreen on the scalp unless you absolutely have to, wear the hat. Cool

Good luck my friend,

Eman,

I agree with Nobuzz. Considering I've always wore a hat anyway (especially even more once I started losing my hair), I didn't mind getting an HT in the summer...but if you don't want to wear a hat outside all summer, I suggest you wait until the winter months Wink

Hey E, any updates or confirmed HT date yet??

Yeah, stay away from the sunscreen---- Also, I think 6 months is a little overboard to stay out of the sun, TBH. I think the first 3 months are critical, but after that just take care that you don't burn your scalp.

While I think we do need to be careful, I am not sure what the difference between months 6 -12 are with regards to sunlight.

Anyway, if you have a HT between Feb/March by end of July you should be OK. I stopped wearing a hat after 2 1/2 months for #1 and by 6-7 months I was playing golf witout a hat.

Everybody is different though.......

Well, just because you played golf without a hat doesn't mean YOU saw the light of day where you hit it!! Big Grin

At least your head didn't still look like a golf ball with a few thousand dimples in it!! Wink

Thanks for the responses everyone.

I still don't have a firm date yet for my HT (I know, make the appointment already). Definitely going to have one, just have to figure out the timing with work and the summer and all.

And as you know B, summer time is a precious commodity here in chicagom so not sure I want to do it before then.
