Is there a fairly standard ratio to 1,2,3+ grafts when removed via strip surgery? 2's are more common than 1's right? I had 1279 grafts yesterday with 379 1's, 656 2's, and 244 3's for a total of 2,423 hairs. Is that a fairly standard number for that amount of grafts?

There have been studies done on the ratio of 1,2,3,&4 hair FU grafts found in a typical donor strip. And you are correct in saying there is a "fairly standard" ratio. I have never seen a study or a case in which the 2 hair FU are not the dominant number, and usually around 50% of the total FU's. There is greater variance in the ratio of 1,3, and 4 hair grafts which depends a lot on hair type and ethnic background.

I have come up with the fallowing ratio I use because the numbers are easy to remember and fall within the range of studies I have seen.

1 hair FU 20%
2 hair FU 50%
3 hair FU 25%
4 hair FU 05%

Your surgery seems to fall within the standard ratio in which half the FU's are 2 hair grafts and considering we see a wide variance in the percentage of 1 and 4 hair grafts from case to case.

I hope this is helpful

Dr. Paul,

It's great to see you posting on the forum! Welcome back Smile

I think I'll add this forum thread under our "Frequently Asked Questions and Discussions thread as many seeking patients are concerned about the average number of hairs per graft.

Best wishes,

Falc
