Is there any time during the growing-in phase where the hair or scalp looks unnatural or eye-catching?

Yes, when it's just starting to come in it looks like the new hair has a buzz cut. One of my friends asked me "did you get a haircut, it looks real short on top?". I said, "yeah, something like that" and just laughed.
