Has anyone had some of their open donor scars at the back of the scalp punched out and stitched up to reduce the visual impact of the circular scarring ?
Yes, mine was punched out and stapled to reduce the visual impact of the circlulat scar, its really invisisble now. Infact my wife, she has to wander around to exactly trace the donor area.
Were yours 4 mm diameter scars from the old style plug harvesting ?
Who did the punchouts for you ? and how many in one go ? - were they close together ?
Sorry about questions but keen to see if this is the option I should tale for some scars that will not be amenable to be taken out with strip excision - which really I may not be able to have any more anycase
Mine is an Follicular Unit Transplantation done my Dr. Ron Shapiro. My donor area had a very thin line, around 2 mm in width and 6 inches long, had around 40 staples punched by Dr. himself. It took really short time to heal. As days are passing, its getting better and better.
Dr Shapiro and others good surgeons will strip out the "old punch scars" then disect FUs from surrounding tissue for tranplant. The donor scar is closed with 1 strip (stitches or staples)
A strip excision will certainly remove some of the open donor scarring but not all scars will be amenable to removal in this manner. Using FU to camouflage these remaining open donor scars is certainly possible but clearly means that these FUs cannot be used elsewhere such as repair of frontal forelock.
This point is even more apt given that those people with open donor scarring will have a limited supply of available donor hair. Therefore to make best use of available FU and nevertheless provide maximum camouflage to the donor scarring, then a punch out and stitch up strategy for those open donor scars not amenable to excision strip is clearly something that should be considered.
This is the basis of my original question and anyone who has experience of this punch out and stitch up of the old-style open donor scars arising from punch grafting might be able to provide an insight into how effective this camouflage strategy is.
