hi all,
im a newbie and i just have a few questions to ask. i am 23 years old and im indian in need of a transplant. i need about 1800 grafts.

so how many people have had just one operation and been happy with it. i dont want to get it done and find out that i will still have to get another 1-2 ht done after the first. i dont mind my hair being dense as i guess as i getolder i will loose it anyway, just wanna cover the parts that i lost due to my turban.

J.a.t.t,

Welcome to the forums. If you haven't heard this yet from anyone, then allow me to be the first to tell you. Having a transplant at such an early age has high risk. The risk I'm referring to is because hairloss is unpredictable, you may lose more hair...and the younger you are when you start losing it, the higher probability that more hairloss is in your future. So...because 1800 grafts is not a lot, you MAY be satisfied with it, temporarily...BUT if you lose more hair, you may have to continue getting transplants to fill in the area where you've lost hair. HERE IS THE RISKY PART: one has a finite donor supply which means you will NEVER be able to keep up with your hairloss if you start with restoring your high school hairline and you continue to lose hair. If you follow this strategy, you will end up with a very unnatural looking head of hair (low hairline with balding areas in the back).

My recommendation for you at this point is get on finasteride to try to stop your hairloss (and maybe if you are lucky, you'll be able to regrow some hair with it). Stay on it at least a year to see if it helps you.

IMPORTANT NOTE: A hair transplant is NOT a cure for hairloss...it simply removes hair from the sides and back and transplants it up top. You will most likely continue to lose hair. If you do...your 1800 grafts will look unnatural without getting additional hair transplants.

Falc

Falc has good advice for you. At your age, I would think it's next to impossible to have one pass nor would it be a wise choice in that you still likely have native hair that may be prematurely killed off in the process.

I second the idea to get on Finasteride and take a wait and see approach. If you have a HT at age 23, depending on your rate of loss, you may well need another 2-3 HT's in the next 10-20 years assuming you have enough donor hair.

I've seen many pics of twentysomethings who opted for aggressive, low, dense hairlines and used a major quantity of grafts to get this. I'm wondering what's going to happen in 10-20 years when they head toward NW 6-7'sville and need grafts but find out they've exhausted their supply.

Slow down, do more research and then make a decision you can live with.

Best of luck-

i understand what u r saying but to tell u the truth i had lost my hair from the front of my head from the age of 11 maybe earlier. i lost it due to me tieing my hair up in a knot from a young age which i used to do very tight which thus has pulled out all my roots from the front of my head, also to tell u truth its only now deterioated more now as i do worry about it more now aswell, thus why i have lost a bit more hair now..... also i know that when i get older i will loose my hair but then i wont mind as ill be getting older and i can shave it off then, but for now im 23 yrs old and i worry about it alot.

thanks

Well you've heard our advice but it's your choice and your head. As long as you stay conservative in the beginning, you should be fine. BUT...I still recommend that you do your homework first. Learn all you can for awhile.

Losing hair at 11? Sounds a bit young. I also don't believe you are losing hair due to tying it too tightly. There must be another explanation for it...perhaps medical.

Anyway...good luck to you.

Falc-- I think he is trying to say that he is suffering from traction alopecia, which is a common occurence in African American men and women who wear tightly braided "corn-rows" or men of middle eastern descent who must tightly tie their hair in order to wear a turban or headress.

Perhaps JATT can comment on this, in order to clear this up?

If this is the case, the hair in the temple region is often so tightly braided or "pulled" that over a period of time, the hair simply falls out due to the constant stress placed on it.

JATT it would be very helpful if you could take a couple of high resolution pics for us to look at.

It may be that you would be a candidate, but regardless of cause, Falc and Hairbank are right, you still need to stay conservative.

Take Care,
J

Hi

Great advice from the two experts above.. Once must be cautious as the donor supply is limited. Also, I can pretty much guarantee you will need more than one procedure as most of the people on here have had about 2-3 for a full restoration.. At such a young age one cannot predict further loss and the need for another HT

Good luck

well its not because of braids, its to do with me being sikh. at thats why i have lost hair on the front of my head, i did use to do it itght and yes over time it has fallen out. now in turns of my hair i am not badly bald but i am bald and i can tell, i will get pictures up soon, as in regards to me losing hair later on in life i dont mind shaving my hair off when i get older, its just at the moment when i shave my hair off it looks weird as it has patches.
