Hello,
I would first like to thank the community. I have done research about HT for the past couple of months and this forum has provided me with very useful information.

I am 29 and losing hair on top of my head and on the crown. I have attached my picture to this message. I started losing hair when I was around 23 or so. It seems to have stabilized as of now. I tried rogaine for couple of months but had to stop because of excessive dandruff and allergy problems. I am going for HT.

Front and top is my first priority and crown is my second priority. I was thinking of 2500 grafts on top and 1000 grafts on the crown. Based on recommendation from this forum I've decided to have the HT with Dr.Cooley at NC. Do you think the grafts count is reasonable or do you think I will have to split the HT into multiple sessions? Any suggestions are welcome.

Hi,
First of all I would like to inform that you should not make the assumption that your hairloss has stabilized unless you are taking propecia. Hairloss never stops, even the working of propecia will usually only slow thing down.
Good plan of attack, go for frontal and top first and see whats left fo the crown.

To get the best information about how many grafts you need it requires to see a HT doc. He can evaluate all the variables (hair thickness, donor density...) and make a good evaluation.
From just looking at the pics I would guestimate about 4500 FUE grafts or 5000 strip grafts.

Thanks bverotti. I agree with you on hair loss stability. I am planning to go on propecia after HT to prevent any further hair loss.
In the picture I had attached my hair was wet. I should have mentioned that. Sorry. I did an online consult with dr.cooley and he recommended a 2500-3000 grafts on top and front. He said that as I was still young and haven't tried propecia yet, I had a good chance of regrowing my crown hair with propecia. I was therefore thinking of about 500-1000 grafts on the crown just to make sure that the region is atleast somewhat covered.

If your going to start propecia you need to start BEFORE a surgery to avoid the potential permanent shockloss to hair you still have left .Plus you might be a great responder that will require less grafts . I cant emphasize enough how important it is to start NOW instead of later. With your hair characteristics 2500-3000 more then likely will leave you unhappy, If you were 40 then I would say otherwise.

Hmm...that was a very good suggestion. Thank you. I never thought about that. I have my HT surgery scheduled this month. Based on your suggestion it feels like going for propecia after 6months of getting a HT is a wise thing to do. Because shockloss occurs before the first six months.

No going on 6 months BEFORE is a wise thing to do .Shockloss can happen the day of surgery and those hairs may never return. Ive seen it happen alot .Im suprised the clinic your going to didnt explain this to you.

Thanks. The clinic I am going to did explain about shock loss. They didn't however provide info on when exactly to start propecia. Now that you've mentioned, I will ask them regarding this.
If I decide to go for propecia after the surgery, when do you think would be good time to start?

PGP good advice on the propecia before a HT, totally forgot about that one.

Well, less FUE because FUE has a higher hair per graft then strip, up to 10% more.
So 4500 FUE (unsplitted of course) equal about 5000 strip grafts.

Can you elaborate on this?

Assuming that a strip surgeon is doing true follicular unit grafting, the only way I can see a lesser number of FUE grafts being needed is if the larger follicular unit grafts are targeted as with strip, what you see is what you get.

Best wishes,

Falc

You have chosen a great Doctor in Dr. Cooley. I had my surgery on April 18th. I have experienced little to no shock loss and can see many new hairs sprouting at less tha 2 months. My scar feels great, although still red. I had my hair cut at 1 month and the hairdresser never noticed my scar. Whatever Cooley suggests, I would go with that. Plus you will get many free graphs as well. I paid for 2500 and ended up getting over 3100 graphs. You can start Propecia at anytime. Good Luck.

Falc,
Indeed, FUE allows for the surgeon to go for the larger grafts whereas the strip contains whatever it contains.

We average about 2,3 hairs per graft. Some other FUE docs report going as high as 2,7 hairs per graft on average.
