HL,
Patients do not HAVE to take medicines to maintain transplants. In fact, most donor follicles do not have DHT receptors, which is what makes them good transplant follicles in the first place. Medications really have their greatest usefulnes in maintaining what is left of the recipient hair to act as "filler" for transplants. Here is a good example. The first picture shows what he has left before surgery The second picture is 7 months after surgery. Note how the natural recipient hair was blended into the HT hair to maximize density and coverage. The use of medication would be helpful in maintaining those native recipient hairs, but they won't do much of anything for the transplanted hairs. I've been a lurker for several months now and I want to say that this forum is terrific.
However, I was just hopeful to find out several beginner questions, and I am not quite sure where to post them. For example, the term "FU" - I am not understanding what that means. If it is posted clearly somewhere and I simply missed, please accept my apologies. On that note, I was wondering if there was a topic somewhere that had the abbreviations that are commonly used on this forum? |

oh, i just saw from another thread, "FU" means follecular units. However, can someone tell me what that means? Does that mean actual hairs? Sorry for the idiotic questions... |

Hello Everyone, I have looked into this subject a fair bit and it seems to be very indepth with the surgury. Im not too sure about having to take medication to maintain the surgury. I have noticed people before that i think may have had the surgury to have hair that looks unnatural. Can people notice the difference between this and real hair?

T_gerry,
After 9 days, the transplanted hair is completely secure. Thus, you are safe to get a haircut. Just ask your barber to be careful around the donor scar since it may still be senstive. How does hair transplantation work?
Will the results look completely natural? How long does the procedure last? Does the hair transplant procedure hurt? What is the cost of hair transplantation? How many grafts/hairs will I need? What is the recovery/healing time? Will people know I had a hair transplant? When will my new hair start to grow? # Are the results permanent? How do I find an excellent hair restoration surgeon? What causes baldness? The cause of male pattern baldness is no longer a mystery. Research has shown that when the male hormone - testosterone is exposed to 5-alpha-reductase, an enzyme in the hair follicle, it produces another hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which causes permanent hair loss. This hormone (DHT) causes the hair follicle to shrink and grow a finer hair that is lighter in color, shorter and less deeply rooted than its predecessor. Most often, the hair in the balding region will continue to grow at an increasingly slower rate until hair growth ceases completely. The pattern of progression, and the extent and speed of male pattern baldness, is largely dictated by genetics, hormones and age. mark456 (promotional link removed) mark |

I am a Male - 47 years - Normal Health
Have been told for HT will need 600-800 Grafts to fix Receding Hair line - about 1 to 1 1/2 inch and Some Hair loss on Top - About 75 % in okay condition. The donor (near my neck) area Hair are very strong and thick. Q: Is it so after HT I have to take certain Medication daily for 1 month and then twice a week for life long? If yes, what Medication is that and what are the possible side effects? What happens if I stop medication after 2-3 months? Thanks. |
