I've been curious concerning these two. I was told that the only reason to take these two was to hopefully retain whatever hair you might lose. These two doesn't do anything for the transplanted hair that is moved from the back of your head to the front. Now, both say it is most effective in the crown area, not the frontal area. My question is, if you're taking hair from the back of your head close to the crown and moving it to the front why would these two meds work on the frontal hair that was transplanted? I was told the reason why the transplanted hair from the back transfered to the front will not fall out was due to the DHT won't affect his graphs. So, why doesn't Rogaine & Finasteride work on the front. The hairs in the front came from the back crown area. So, the hairs that were transplanted don't know they are in the front, right? Does this make sense??

They do work in the front. I know this from personal experience as well as talking to doctors. Rogaine for example, cannot LEGALLY advertise that it works in the front because the study only looked at hair around the vertex. I think is also the case with Propecia.

Jrbrass,
There are varying opinions of whether either medication works in the front, but some swear by it, such as rp1979. I imagine those who have had successful regrowth in the front due to medication is proof that it can work. But medication is the best way to go in the beginning, at the very least, can prevent further loss of hair. But my point is if the transplanted hair from the back is in the front, the frontal hair doesn't know it's in the front, the hairs still think they're in the back.

Hi Jrbrass,
Firstly, the principle of HT's is that all males have a "safe zone" around the back and the side of the head where the hairs are not impacted by MPB. Hair is surgically moved from the safe zone onto the top of the head to provide cosmetic benefit. These hairs should then grow for the duration of the patients life without the aid of any medication. Finasteride & Rogaine are prescribed to retain the remaining native hairs ie non-transplanted hairs at the top of the head. I trust this helps. "Plan for the worst & hope for the best" |
