With HT's there's really no standard answer or "one size fits all" response to your Q's.

As for UK HT's.............I don't have any surgeons there I would recommend to you at the present time. Your hair will be with you for life so my advice to you is go wherever you need to go.........many from UK have flown to the U.S. for their HT.

Yes......HT's really work. Click on My Hair Loss Blog at the bottom of my post to see mine.

I would recommend you research until you "know" what your getting into..........there is no magic time frame but I'd say you'd at least want to spend 3-6 months surfing Hair Loss on the web, discussing it on forums and asking as many questions as possible to achieve the comfort level you need to move forward.

The two primary techniques for HT's at present are STRIP - where a donor strip of hair is removed from the back of your head and hairs transplanted in recipient site, or FUE (follicular unit extraction) where a surgical instrument is used to "punch" the grafts individually from the back of your head then place in the recipient site. I prefer STRIP because you can get many more grafts in one session (as many as 7700 have been harvested) and it's much more cost effective. Some try FUE because they don't want the thin donor scar left from STRIP (which is covered by hair).

How many grafts you need is dependent on how much hair you have lost. You can use this Hair Transplant Calculator to determine the number of grafts you may need. For the appearance of density, keep in mind you'll need a minimum of 45 grafts per sq. cm. Many will aim for 45-65 grafts per sq. cm. in the frontal 1/3 of the scalp, then taper back to maybe 30 or so grafts per sq. cm. in the crown. Make sense?

Do some research on this site using the "find" feature................there's ton's of info for you.

taurus,

Hairbank gave you some excellent information.

HTs do work...but don't take anyone's word for it...take a look at a number of patients before/after photos. Use hairbanks blog and my links below as a good starting point. Research as long as you need to until you understand how the process works.

In addition, I recommend reading some of the following threads that might help give you some more info:

hi Taurus Hairbank has given you some sensible advice but please dont dismiss uk docs on hearsay only, a few are dragging ht`s into the 21st century. I had my ht 16 months ago and am more than pleased with my results so far. i had a relatively small procedure and if you look under "balodys pics" in the surgeons reviews sect I think you will agree I have had a major transformation, also look at abbies pics.pat the publisher of this forum is currently in the uk observing Farjo among others,I am eagerly awaiting his opinions.the only thing i fear wthout seeming patronising is at 28 you are quite young has your hair loss stablised?do you know your norwood?
