Two weeks ago I had a 2000 FU HT, and saw a bit of shock loss the following week -- nothing substantial that I can see, but definitely some more hairs on the pillow or in the comb for a few days. Today I was inspecting my hairline and I'm seeing numerous tiny hairs sprouting -- they're not the 1/4 inch hairs from my grafts, they look like a day or two's growth of hair. I was under the impression that shock loss caused you to lose the hairs that were thinning and ready to fall out anyways -- is that mistaken? Or is it possible that some of my grafts are already starting to sprout (that seems more unlikely to me)?

I can personally verify that shocked hairs definately can grow back. I got a transplant in my temples about 5 months ago. The shock loss was absolutely incredible on me...the hair just behind where my transplants were done thinned considerably.

However, it did grow back, and now it looks perfectly fine...especially with my transplants! I was really panicked, but it seems to have helped out in the long run to stay calm.

However, this experience did show me (I believe) where my hair loss will progress next, and what I will have to cover up with additional surguries as the hairline recedes.

I'm no doc, but speaking from experience I'd say it is way to early to see growth yet. It is very likely it will fall out. When mine fell out, the root of the transplanted hair looked kinda crinkled and curled over. Weird, since my hair is perfectly straight. All grew back nicely.

Has anybody experienced shock loss around the donor area?? Will this grow back??

I have alot of hair on my comb every morning when I comb around the donor area (sides and back of head).

I've also experienced alot of shock loss on top.

Ron - Something doesn't seem right here. Even your transplanted hairs shouldn't start falling out until about a week after surgery, usually more like 10 days or so. I didn't even notice my transplanted hairs were falling out until 2-3 weeks after surgery. To be losing anything, transplanted hairs or other hair, after 3 days seems really odd. Did you ask your doctor about this?

To Ron and Gary,

I noticed Shock Loss immediately after surgery. The shock loss was from existing hair (previous plugs from 10 yrs ago), not from FU's. I went in to see my doctor about a week later (on another issue). I asked him about shock loss regarding existing hair. His response was that I could see shock lost anywhere from the 1st week to 2/3 weeks out.

As mentioned in a previous post, I'm 22 days post op and I still see hair on my comb from the donor area every morning. Most of the hair I had on top prior to the surgery is gone....I attribute this to shock loss. I hope at least the old plugs grow back. After all, they are transplanted hairs that genetically should continue to grow all my life...right!!!!

I also had some shock loss behind my transplants. I noticed it looked thinner shortly after my HT. Now, 10 months after surgery it looks better. There are still some that are only 1/2" long.
