Is a micro graft, dissected under a microscope, synonomous with an FU? Is this merely a matter of terminology?

No, Unethical physicians play fast and loose with terminology. May even show you a microscope. But a micro-mini graft is usually cut in the back by a McDonalds type character with funny glasses an some cheap backlighting.Concerned with quiting time not your head. Keep up with your research.

Actually, a FU graft is a more refined type of Micrograft. The difference is that a FU has to be cut under a microscope, and has to be trimmed as closely as possible. An FU also cannot be a divided OR combined "follicular family" (the natural grouping must be respected). NONE of these conditions are necessary for a Micrograft, the Micrograft's only qualifications are 1 to 3 follicles... that's it.

So an FU is definitely a Micrograft. But a Micrograft isn't always an FU.

Mahair is correct, the clinics play games hoping to fool people with terminology. Some clinics say "Our grafts contain follicular units" (as if that was the same thing as being a follicular unit graft). Big deal, even the big pluggy Dolls Hair grafts "contain" follicular units.

The best thing is to really understand the importance of microscopic dissection, and to avoid Minigrafts (coupled grafts, Mixed grafts, bundled grafts). Pick a clinic where you are the only patient that the doctor will work on that day (ask them specifically how many patients the doctor works on, besides you). You have to become an expert or you can get fooled by some of the crooks out there.

In the older days when plugs were used up till the early 1990's then mini grafts started being used, then mid 1990's micro grafts, then late 90's FU mircroscopic disection became the standard of natural results. Thus if they are using Micro grafts-- they are not up to date?
