I have decided to start taking Propecia(Proscar), and currently wear a small, bonded hair system on the crown area. My thinning hair is shaved underneath. I have a strong hairline and the crown is the only real place where I have a problem. So, this is why I'm excited about starting Propecia, because that's where it does it's best work apparently. My question is whether or not the hair system will affect the Propecia negatively? I want to get the best results I can and would like to know if the system will hinder the Propecia. I'm asking this because I wouldn't mind keeping it on for the first 9 months or so of taking Propecia. The hair system helps me out allot mentally and emotionally, and actually looks great. So yeah, what do you guys think?
Thanks Again, danger |

Does anyone have any replies out there to my post? Just wondering, I'd really like to hear what you surgeons and educated people in the hair loss industry have to say.

Danger, we are not getting much feedback from the docs these days. Too bad.
Check out the post and pics of Kar in the photo section of this forum. Apparently his wearing a HP did not prevent the dramatic results he achieved with propecia. However, I believe his results are very rare -- lucky him. I also vaguely recall reading posts a couple months ago from docs who took the position that a HP will not adversely affect hair retention except for the traction in the areas where the HP is attached. (BTW -- I'm not sure I agree with this). However, your issue relates to hair regrowth induced by drugs, not hair retention. How old are you? You sound like you are in the situation I was in 9 years ago, when I started wearing a HP on my crown. I also had a pretty strong hairline and mid-scalp; just a very balding crown. Now, 9 years later, my hairline is barely a rumor and I am a 6. I think you're smart getting on the meds and trying to keep what you have and even restoring what you have lost. I went on minoxidyl(?) in the 80's, when it was brand new for a period of time (6 mos.), with no result. This experience instilled a belief that all these hair drugs were BS money making scams. I didn't know that propecia was for real until finding this site about 3 months ago. I started with proscar about 2 months ago. Good luck! |

Thanks for the replies MarkV and Dr. Glenn M Charles! It's nice to hear from somebody. My hair system is only about the size of the palm of your hand. Like I said, my hairline is in good shape, so thank God for that! I've only been wearing it for about 8 months now, and in no way do I want to wear this thing any longer than I have to. My thinning hair underneath is shaved. And the system is bonded all the way around and inside. Which is, by the sounds of it, not what I should be doing. Any suggestions on how to bond the system with the least ammount of friction? How can it cause permanant hair loss Dr. Charles? Lately, I've been getting really frustrated with the clinic I go to. So any pointers or suggestions would be awesome!

Hi,
I am in the same exact boat as you are except I wore a full hairsystem during the transplants, fully glued and the transplants grew in great. I just had another surgery with Dr. Charles and we went in and started the anterior (I think its called) behind the hairline all the way to the crown area. I felt it better to switch to the clips and remove it at night. Much cleaner! Much more comfortable. Of course Im married so I dont have to worry about some wild chick ripping it off, like has almost happened in the past!! My next step is to fill the crown in in July and wear a much smaller system like an orange crushed. I have been on proscar for 4 months and have seen great results in the crown as well. Though I am not sure if all the hair I was ripping out every month from the Hair system could have just grown back in. Anyway I do recommend you to clip it.You will be able to view your daily results which I really love to see all those new friends springing back into action after a long, long sleep! Good luck! |

Hairseeker,
It's guys like you that put a smile on my face and make this forum a good thing! Thanks for your help in sharing your experience. I'm a pretty active guy and not sure if clips will work too hot for me. I wear a hair system about the size the palm of your hand. I have the thinning hair underneath and have it bonded all the way around and inside. Do you feel that I'll still get as good results with Propecia as if I didn't wear a system? I'm pretty concerned as to what to do because I am hoping to get some better coverage in the crown from Propecia. Cheers, danger |

I've been away for a few months sorry it took so long to reply.
I know with my propecia growth it is very fine hair up until now and think it can be greatly damaged by that glue we use. When the technician tears that bugger off look at all the hairs we lose! We are killing those little buggers that we should cradle in our arms! A hair piece surely damages everything in its path, try and get out of asap like me and prevent further hair homicide! Hope we both can be relieved form this hairpiece bondage soon and be cool again! See ya, |
