I concur; this is going to be a mondo-result when all is said and done!

Also, if I'm not mistaken, it looks like some of the grafts went into some relatively dense native hair to thicken up those areas, as well.

You are right HairDew, that looks like 2 months but I bet this patient will start shedding hair in one week.
My case was exactly the same and I even had more hair after 2 weeks but the shedding started the third week.

This thread contains the photos relating to the hair transplant I had with Dr Feller last July, which Spex has kindly posted to the forum on my behalf. Please accept my apologies for the very long time it has taken me to register and post a write up - I honestly don't know where the last 8 months have gone. In a week I'm heading back to New York to visit Dr Feller for a second procedure, to hopefully fill in the crown and lower the hairline a bit. I thought I would provide an update at this point, and will do the same after my second procedure.

To give some background - I'm 31 years old and had my hair transplant with Dr Feller on July 1st 2008, 18 months after starting taking Propecia. My hair has always been thin and has got noticeably thinner over the last few years – it really struck home when I compared recent photos to ones taken 4-5 years ago. In addition to diffuse thinning on top the temples had also receded significantly and the hairline had moved higher. It's not a great feeling realising that you are
looking noticeably worse and worse each year!

I started researching hair transplants towards the end of 2007 and had three consultations in the UK before finding these forums. It goes without saying that I am delighted to have found them, as they made me realise that I needed to leave the UK to get a decent result. At the UK consultations I had been told that I needed around 800-1000 grafts, a number that I now realise is ridiculously low. Anyone in my situation that receives this small amount of grafts and expects his hair to be transformed will be sadly disappointed.

After the research and a few chats with Spex (many thanks!) I decided to cross the pond for a transplant with Dr Feller. I flew to New York the day before the surgery, stayed at the Andrew Hotel in Great Neck and then flew home the day after surgery.

My goal for the big day itself was to have the temple areas filled in, the hairline lowered slightly and then as many grafts as possible added to the top of my head, working from front to back. I was hoping for around 4000 grafts - I know the amount available depends on hair characteristics, laxity etc and that this was optimistic. As it turned out, I actually received over 4,500 grafts, which was beyond even my most optimistic expectations. I had been doing the stretching exercises on the back of my head for a while before the transplant, and I understand that my laxity was pretty good. I’m sure there were many other factors at play (hair characteristics etc.), but I’m definitely glad I did those exercises each day!

I arrived early on the morning of the surgery and met Dr Feller in his office. He looked at my hair, took some photos and we discussed my goals. I could tell that he was excited about tackling my head and creating a new hairline, and he proceeded to mark out to where the grafts would go. After that I had the injections to numb the back of my head (slightly painful but over in a few seconds) and then went to the procedure room to have the recipient and donor areas shaved and
the strip taken from back of my head. By this time the area was numb and I couldn’t feel what was was going on – it was just a slightly strange sensation!

After the strip was taken from the back and closed up via tricho, injections were made in the recipient area and it was time for the Doc to start making the necessary cuts / slits into which the hairs would be placed. I understand that in another room the technicians were busy separating the hairs from the strip to prepare them for the placement. I think from memory that most of the morning was spent with the Doc cutting the slits, whilst most of the afternoon was spent with the tecs placing the hairs (with some more slits cut late afternoon to accommodate the extra hairs I had left).

The session lasted all day – I arrived before 7.30am and left around 7pm – which I believe is longer than most due to the size of the session. The toughest part was having to stay still (and sitting down) for such a long period of time to allow the Doc to do his work, and by mid afternoon my legs were definitely feeling it! I knew that would be the case though, and it goes without saying that it was well worth it. I also greatly appreciated the patience and skill of the Doc and his technicians, especially as they were working on me for such a long time - thank you very much to all of you if you are reading this.

I think the night of the surgery was the toughest in terms of recovery, and the pain killing drugs were definitely a godsend. After that, the next phase to get through was the following 10 days until the staples came out. Whilst they were painful at times (again, pain killers were a godsend) and sleeping was difficult due to the staples, I was back at home relaxing and the days passed by quickly. And the feeling of having the staples removed was pure joy! After that day I have had no pain whatsoever – the only 'pain' since then has been purely cosmetic.

I took four weeks off from work, which I think is the minimum required for such a large session – at that stage each week can make quite a significant difference to the way things look. I had read many posts explaining how slowly the hair grows and how long it takes for things to start to look normal again, and can honestly say that my my hair looked terrible for those first few weeks back at work. It was a lot shorter than anyone had ever seen it, it was still quite red in places and the sides looked too long compared to the top (to hide the scar). However, thankfully toppik (on top) and couvre (on the scar), as well as keeping a low profile, managed to get me through. It seems like a long time ago now!

One thing I remember another poster saying is that three months is a much better place than two months, and I couldn't agree more. It's amazing what a difference those four weeks makes - things were much easier after the three month mark.
And time does go remarkably quickly - as mentioned above, I can't believe it is more than 8 months since I visited Dr Feller. My hair looks great compared to pre op and my friends are amazed at my new hair. I have told them it is due to Propecia, and they seem to have accepted it given that they don't know much about hair loss Smile

My crown is stll very thin, as it wasn't touched during my first visit July, and I'm looking forward to heading back next week to get that area addressed. Having a HT is a big decision, but even at this relatively early stage I can definitely say it is one of the best decisions I have ever made. Hopefully after the hair from the second procedure has grown out I can remove 'hair' from the list of life's worries!

I took some photos today but am having trouble attaching them as the files appear to be too large. Spex, I will send them to you and would be very grateful if you could upload them for me (or alternatively give me some pointers in the art of photo management and I will do so myself!). Many thanks Smile

Jimuk,

Congrats on your hair transplant with Dr. Feller and thanks for sharing your experience with us.

I look forward to seeing your updated photos. Each photo can't exceed 300k in a discussion thread and 500k in a photo album. You may have to use a photo editor to reduce their size. Alternatively, feel free to create a hair loss weblog at www.hairlossweblogs.com.

Best wishes,

Bill (Falc)
