Hi, first id like to say thanks to everyone who gave me advice on my last post "which is best propecia/ rogaine/monoxidil".....i found it really helpful.

I see whatever most peoples regime is, it usually includes nizoral shampoo 2%...I am new to this, but is this just normal nizoral shampoo / what does the 2% refer to....What is the purpose/advantage of using nizoral 2%

thanks for any advice....i have just ordered the rogaine foam and intend to use the nizoral shampoo too....still have my reservations about popping a propecia along with these, or am i being too cautious.

Macd,

The 2% references the amount of active ingredient ketoconazole, which has been found to be a "weak" DHT inhibitor.

Regular Nizoral contains 1% ketoconazole which is the same amount as in Revita shampoo.

I hope this helps.

blackrain,

Though I partially agree with you, your logic is flawed.

That's like saying minoxidil doesn't work otherwise they'd have a 50% Rogaine solution or a 100mg finasteride tablet instead of the 1mg in Propecia.

In my research, the active ingredient in Nizoral (ketoconazole) may act as a weak DHT inhibitor. In my opinion, I highly doubt anyone suffering from hair loss will regrow hair solely on this treatment however, I suggest that it might help as an adjunct treatment when combined with Propecia and Rogaine.

Read more about ketoconazole.

Best wishes,

Falc

im sorry mate.even though i know what your saying, nizoral does nothing for hair at all.even doctors are now forgetting it.it will only work if you have hairloss from fungal infections.its just rumours again, some guy once said to me ive just read that rubbing salami into your head grows hair, and now everyone started doing it.if anything, nizoral will take out your hair not grow it.

Can Nizoral shampoo help prevent hair loss?

Can Nizoral shampoo really prevent hair loss?

Nizoral shampoo is primarily used to treat dandruff related problems with the hair on the scalp. It contains a drug called ketoconazole that is found to be very effective in the treatment of fungal infection of the scalp on the head and another type of the shampoo is quite popular for treating dandruff.

Ketoconazole is mainly used to treat infections that are caused by yeast or fungus. Ketoconazole helps in treating these infections by preventing the growth of fungus or yeast of killing them. There are many creams available in the market based on this drug that are used to treat the following:

* Ringworm
* Tinea pedis, also known as ringworm of the foot
* Yeast infection of the skin

Some popular product names that use this drug are Nizoral Shampoo, Nizoral Cream and Nizoral A-D Shampoo.

So, if the scalp on your head has fungal infection that is causing hair loss, Nizoral shampoo can treat the fungal infection and prevent further loss of hair. But, if you are suffering with hair loss that is not caused by fungal infection of the scalp then Nizoral won’t be of any use. Nizoral can not treat or cure baldness!

One should not depend only on a shampoo to prevent hair loss. Consult a doctor to diagnose the causes of hair loss and get treatment accordingly.

HT55, I agree 100%!! I believe a two or three prong attack using Nizoral may very well be of some benefit, and certainly is to your morale, plus you're moving in the right direction and doing something about your hair loss. I'm going to be starting the 2% soon.

Nizoral 2% is primarily used for seborrheic dermatitis or dandruff of the scalp as well as psoriasis. There is no convincing evidence or data that states Nizoral is good for hair growth. However, if it is working well on your scalp for other reasons, it is ok to continue.

Blackrain,

I agree that it will most likely not do anything to stop hair loss, at least on its own. There is some evidence to suggest its a weak DHT blocker, but I haven't heard one patient report hair regrowth or a stop in hair loss due to use of Nizoral.

As Dr. Mejia stated, it's primary use is for seborrheic dermatitus, dandruff or other scalp conditions.

However, as you are entitled to your opinion, so are others to theirs.

Please treat other members with respect or you can find yourself a new forum.

Your anticipated cooperation is expected and appreciated.

Falc

Gentlemen,

If you look at clinical studies there is evidence that ketoconazole has shown increased haircount in a double blind study.. This is not one which was conducted by Nizoral or Revita so it is not biased. Nobody is saying that it "regrows hair" rather it has shown anti-DHT properties and increased haircount. Regarding shampoos, it makes sense to include this as a part of your Anti balding regimine.. Many people including myself take part in this and have no vested interest. I can tell you the Revita shampoo is a very good product and one of the best shampoos I have used out of MANY..

Talk to your colation surgeon and almost all will agree that using these products is a good idea and will compliment any hairloss plan

Blackrain, if you don't like it , don't use it . No need to critisize those looking to maximize on a product which has shown documented benefits. Nizroel is quite cheap and actually is an excellent dandruff shampoo as well.
