rayzub,
Thanks for the kudos! To answer your questions: 1. Propecia is only effective as long as you use it. If certain hairs are genetically programmed to fall out due to male pattern baldness and were saved from Propecia, upon stopping the medication, these hairs would being to die again. 2. Male pattern baldness is progressive and there is always a risk of further loss. My hair loss pattern is pretty established and based on my family history of hair loss (which can be used as a guide, not an absolute), I probably won't lose much more. Additionally, I am on Propecia which seems to be saving the hair below my crown. I am thinking of doing a 4th hair transplant with Dr. Hasson in the somewhat near future. I'll keep you posted. It is always good though to keep some donor hair in reserve for the event of future loss. Best wishes, Bill (Falc) To learn about how I restored my hair, read my hair restoration story with pictures. tommy,
Thanks my friend. There were certainly times of emotional struggle as I had to wait for hair growth, and also when I experienced some bad shock loss after the first two hair transplants. Thankfully, I haven't experienced any noticeable side effects with Propecia. I'm not aware of any long term reported side effects with Propecia. But life is short, and something is going to get us - no matter what it is. If I had to do it all over again, I would get larger sessions from the beginning instead of gradually increasing from a small to a large session. Tommy,
My pleasure Considering hair restoration surgery and even non-surgical treatments can be stressful. There is so much information out there to sift through, and a lot of it is contradictory. That's why everything should be read with a critical eye and adult members of this community should draw their own conclusions and make their own choices. Hi Falc,
Thanks for that, I totally agree with your points. I just wanted to clarify my question on Propecia a little further: I do agree that, once I stop using it, my hair will be receptive to the DHT in my system again, so they will start dying again. However, I assume they'll start dying over a natural amount of time (a few years) instead of in just a few weeks or months. I'm comparing this to the Rogaine experience, where people claim that as soon as they stop using it, all the hair they preserved OR grew falls out at once in a matter of a few months. I expect that stopping Propecia would only re-start the natural regression of my hairline, over a natural amount of time. Also, when you're older (say in your 40s), there's less DHT in your system, so the theory is that maybe not as many hairs would die as compared to when you're in your 20s or 30s. So it's best to take Propecia at a younger age since that's when DHT's effect is at its strongest. It might be possible to stop using Propecia with minimal hair loss in your 40s and further on. What do you think? Once again, your help and advice is greatly appreciate, please don't ever stop, you're much needed. |

rayzub,
Thanks for the clarification on your question. I can't say with certainly, but I've heard of patients complaining about rapid hair loss as if male pattern baldness went on steroids after stopping both Propecia and Rogaine. Why this happens or whether or not it happens to everyone, I'm not sure. In my opinion, it's not worth the risk finding out since once you lose it, the likelihood of hair regrowth is slim even if you start the medication again. I wanted to ask you Falceros if you had to start over again today what would you do different? Would you get a larger sections to start? Which doctor would you visit? I am not sure where you live but would you pick the nearest coalition doctor or would you travel?
When I first research hairloss I wanted to go to Bosley but couldn't afford $19 a graft. Then I actually booked a flight to Los Angeles to visit Mayer/Fleming for a consultation for a flap. Thank god the travel agent screwed up my flight and I couldn't get on the plane. After that I visited Dr. Hasson when he worked for another clinic and he refused me because of age and degree of hairloss. 5 years later I had my surgery with H&W. I am lucky because I did not research at all and I think if I could have afforded Bolsey I would have still gone there. Thank goodness to the people that there are website like this. I read that you are considering coming to H&W for your 4th surgery if you do we should go out for drink compliments of Joe. I assist H&W with translation when needed and available.I am not a rep, I am a full time real estate agent. My comments and opinions are 100% mine. |

Lorenzo,
Yes, in fact, I think Joe still owes me a drink (or dinner) since he didn't take me out the last time I was out there. Shame on him I am very thankful for the head of hair I've acquired over the years from 3 unique physicians. But if I had to do it all over again, I would definitely go for larger sessions from the beginning rather than going from small to large. Whereas not all prospective patients are ideal candidates for super megasessions, I certainly had the balding pattern, hair density, and scalp elasticity for one (or two). That said, I have a lot of faith in all of the Coalition physicians and wouldn't hesitate to trust any of them with my scalp. I've been highly impressed by a great number of them, especially as we're all beginning to see more photos. But like everyone else, I have my subjective preferences and have chosen the doctors I did for a reason. Looking back, I would have gone to Dr. Hasson in the beginning and probably would have been done in 2, instead of 3 sessions. Regarding a 4th session, it's very possible, but not definite that I am going in for one. Mike Ferko and I have been playing phone tag about scheduling something, but it seems like we've been having trouble getting in touch. I trust when we connect, we'll discuss plans and work out something suitable to both of our schedules. I'm thankful to say though, that at this time, I'm feeling pretty good about my hair and don't feel the "need" for one. But like most hair transplant patients, I often get hair greed and would certainly like more Bill (Falc) To learn about how I restored my hair, read my hair restoration story with pictures. True Spex, very true
Lorenzo, I think we should tag team Joe on this one. Let's make him buy us both dinner I actually live in PA. So I'm not exactly a hop, skip, and a jump away from Hasson and Wong. But Vancouver is beautiful and I don't mind flying. Between those and a quality hair transplant, it makes the journey all worthwhile. Though a dinner on Joe would just make the trip all that more worthwhile Bill (Falc) To learn about how I restored my hair, read my hair restoration story with pictures.
